Before you book a cabin
- Ask what is in the nightly total. Lodging in Lumpkin County carries an 8% hotel-motel tax, Georgia’s $5 a night fee and sales tax; the lodging costs page explains each.
- Ask about the drive. The drive times here are computed on OpenStreetMap data with no traffic, so allow longer.
- Bringing a dog? Policies differ cabin by cabin, even within one rental company. The pet-friendly page lists which sites say yes.
- Lumpkin County's hotel-motel tax is 8%. The Board of Commissioners raised it from 5% on June 20, 2023 (Resolution 2023-33), effective for occupancy on or after Aug. 1, 2023. Lumpkin County Planning & Development: Short-Term Rentals
- Georgia's State Hotel-Motel Fee is $5.00 per night, collected by innkeepers and marketplace innkeepers on each night a room, cabin or other short-term rental is rented (Rule 560-13-2-.01). Georgia Department of Revenue: State Hotel-Motel FAQ
- Lumpkin County says that if you list a short-term rental only through marketplace platforms such as Airbnb or VRBO, those platforms must remit the local and state hotel-motel taxes for you. If you advertise yourself or collect rent directly, you remit them, due the 20th of each month. Lumpkin County Planning & Development: Short-Term Rentals
Questions
How far ahead should I book a fall cabin in North Georgia?
Book as early as you can. Georgia State Parks says its cottages, yurts and campsites often book up a year in advance for fall, and you can reserve now for next fall. Private cabins near Dahlonega face the same October demand, especially on Gold Rush Days weekend, which falls on the third weekend of October.
Are there pet-friendly cabins near Dahlonega?
Some. Georgia State Parks says some of its parks have dog-friendly cabins, though pets are barred from lodges, yurts and park buildings. Private cabins set their own pet policies and fees, so confirm in writing before you book, including size limits and whether dogs may be left alone in the cabin.

Does it snow in Dahlonega?
Occasionally. NOAA's 1991-2020 normals for the Dahlonega 4WSW station show about 3.3 inches of snow in a typical year, mostly in January, February and December. January averages a high near 50°F and a low near 27°F. Cabins on steep gravel drives can be hard to reach after ice, so ask hosts about access.
